The College of Physicians and Surgeons in Boston, Mass. was founded in 1880 as a coeducational medical school. Thomas James Lassiter (1869-1920) of Johnston County, N.C., was the son of William G. and Bettie Woodall Lassiter. He graduated from the Turlington Institute in Smithfield, N.C., and taught school in various schools in Johnston County and also in Louisiana. When he returned from Louisiana in December 1895 he joined the Smithfield Herald where he became a partner. He married Rena Bingham in June 1908, and they had two sons, William and Tom.
